Thijs Dekeukeleire is a Doctoral Candidate at Ghent University's Department of Art History and the University of Antwerp's Department of History. In his PhD dissertation, he examines the discursive power of the artistic male nude in light of changing views of masculinity and male sociability in fin-de-siècle Belgium, focusing on works by, inter alia, Jean Delville, Jef Lambeaux and Charles Van der Stappen. He is interested broadly in the intersection of visual arts and gender in the long nineteenth century. Thijs previously interned at the Museum of Art in Ostend and at the Musée d'Orsay in Paris, and taught art history at the Ghent School of Arts.
As part of his PhD project, Thijs is a member of the organizing and scientific committees of the conference Male Bonds in Nineteenth-Century Art, organized jointly by Ghent University and the European Society for Nineteenth-Century Art (ESNA), to be held in the Museum of Fine Arts, Ghent, on 15-16 May 2018. He is also a board member of XIX, the Belgian intermuseum and interuniversity research platform for nineteenth-century art.
