Abstract

This research project is a joined effort of the Gallo-Roman Museum in Tongeren and Ghent University, committed to mapping human occupation and land use from the Late Iron Age to Early Middle Ages (ca. 100 BC to AD 750). The main focus centers around the developments in the Roman civitas Tungrorum, a region roughly coinciding with eastern Belgium, the southern Netherlands, and some small parts of Luxembourg, northern France and western Germany.  To understand the larger societal dynamics at play, the project also aims to map the end of the Late Iron Age phase and the Early Middle Ages in the same geographical area.
