Abstract

Bookperformance, which is equally Performancebook, is a proprietary concept reflecting life, uncompromisingly written as a single word, coined by Çiğdem Mirol in 2011. As its originator and philosopher, Mirol has developed it across her artistic and academic practice, including her MA and PhD research. Deliberately written as a single word (all rights reserved in all languages), Bookperformance foregrounds the orientation of “holding space for life’s unfolding authorship” [ruimte houden voor het ontvouwen van het auteurschap van het leven], approaching co-authorship as an embodied, relational, and ethical practice. Through literary, visual, and sonic expressions, Mirol's work invites multisensory reading, writing, and creative engagement as forms of encounter with the world. Since 2011, Mirol has developed Bookperformance across multilingual and international contexts as an author and artist/painter. While her  research has been academically recognized and supported through KASK & UGent, Bookperformance extends across artistic, academic, and public spaces—including universities, schools, archives, festivals, libraries, and state institutions—where it intervenes in established yet often unquestioned practices of authorship, knowledge-making, and responsibility.  As a lived practice, it also critically engages with digital and AI-mediated representations that reduce authorship and knowledge-making to unquestioned systems of authority. Alongside her artistic and academic practice, Mirol teaches and coaches, drawing on the principles of Bookperformance to foster ethical approaches to co-authorship. Her work supports researchers and practitioners in reflecting critically on recognition, responsibility, and institutional practices, while encouraging awareness of relevant legal and ethical frameworks.
