Bookperformance, also Performancebook, is a proprietary concept coined by Çiğdem Mirol in 2011, reflecting life as an ongoing practice of “holding space for life’s unfolding authorship.” It approaches co-authorship as an embodied, relational, and ethical practice grounded in “We are all one.” Since 2011, Mirol has developed Bookperformance internationally through artistic and academic practice which evolved through the RAP-Authorship Studies project into life and promoted through UGent and KASK. It includes her self-invented alphabet of sounds and colours, “multisensory reading-writing” ©, and a body of pieces performed and published in connection with Bookperformance manifestations. The first of these is Yüzüm Kitapperformans (2012) / MyFace Bookperformance (2014), a self-published, non-commercial textual work forming the first part of Çiğdem y Mirol’s Bookperformance QUARTET. Bookperformance challenges conventional ideas of authorship, authority, knowledge-making, and copyright, and has unfolded through hundreds of manifestations across countries, languages and media. Its living impact extends beyond each event and encounter through tree planting, with thousands of trees planted worldwide. It extends genuine resources of life across artistic, academic, and public spaces, intervening in unquestioned practices of authority, authorship, and knowledge-making, and promoting responsibility within co-authorship. Although its naming has impacted common usage, often as a designation for book-related events, such usage only represents one aspect of what a Bookperformance is.
