This project deals with art documentaries in the 1940s and 1950s, in particular the works by two filmmakers and art historians: Paul Haesaerts and Carlo Ludovico Ragghianti. It investigates how Haesaerts’ “cinéma critique” and Ragghianti’s “critofilm” can be situated in the evolution of experimental art documentaries and how they both developed new models of art historical scholarship by using cinema.
