Abstract

The PhD concerns repentance ceremonies in Theravada and Mahayana Buddhism and their link to the concept of karma. Apart from comparing relevant vinaya texts related to repentance ceremonies, the PhD also studies the sutra literature on repentance and Theravada and Chinese commentaries on the vinaya and sutra ideas and practices. A case study will be added to study the perception of ideas and practices in a contemporary setting.
