Irene Chioni received her BA (2021) and MA (2023; supervisor: Prof. Domenica Romagno) degrees in Classics from the University of Pisa, where she developed a strong interest in Greek (socio)linguistics. During her Master's, Irene spent a semester at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (AUTH) through an Erasmus+ scholarship (February-June 2022). In Thessaloniki, she engaged for the first time with papyrology through her contacts with Prof. Panagiota Sarischouli.
After completing her degree, she received another Erasmus+ scholarship for an internship within the ERC-funded project Everyday Writing in Graeco-Roman and Late Antique Egypt (EVWRIT; PI: Prof. Klaas Bentein) at Ghent University (February-June 2024). There, she contributed to the pragmatic annotation and sociolinguistic analysis of a corpus of petitions from Roman Egypt. From January to September 2025, she worked as a Predoctoral Researcher at Ghent University on the project Unraveling Ancient Literacies: Digitally Driven, Multimodal, and Comparative Perspectives on 'Non-Literary' Texts (supervisor: Prof. Klaas Bentein).
In November 2025, Irene was awarded a PhD Fellowship from the Research Foundation - Flanders (FWO), which will be conducted under the supervision of Prof. Klaas Bentein and Dr. Chiara Monaco. Her project examines gendered linguistic practices in Post-Classical Greek letters and petitions. This work reflects her growing engagement with documentary materials and the gender perspective that increasingly shapes her academic and personal life.
Irene's research interests include sociolinguistics, (socio)pragmatics, papyrology, language and gender, gender studies, (im)politeness, and formulaic language.
