Abstract
Research into the nature of Indian society generally starts from the assumption that a caste hierarchy exists, that it is guided by an ideological framework or religious texts, and that it has its roots in the Hindu religion. Through extensive fieldwork interviews and questionnaires, this project investigates whether such a caste system exists as an experiential reality of those who live in Karnataka, a south-Indian state.
