BIOGRAPHY
Giusy Caruso is an artist researcher, musicologist and professional concert pianist, oriented to a futuristic approach to music performance that connects art and science applications.
Her research explores on the one side the novel forms of human-machine interaction, in particular the role of the cutting-edge technology for the analysis of gestures and sound in piano playing and for the creation of contemporary multimedia performances. On the other side, she focuses on the effect of human-to-human entrainment, specifically in projects that combines music, dance and theatre. Under the areas of Systematic Musicology and Embodied Music Cognition that integrate theoretical/cognitive, practical/empirical and creative perspectives, her PhD research work contributed to renovate the traditional way to observe and analyse music performance by developing a method grounded on the use of “technology-enhanced mirror” (see the performer-based analysis method in Caruso et al. 2016).
Post-doc researcher affiliated to the Institute of Psychoacoustic and Electronic Music (IPEM), Ghent University, Dr. Caruso is regularly invited as a guest lecturer in Universities, Conservatories and Institutions. She is a member of the editorial board of the journal “ITAMAR” (University of Valencia) and peer reviewer of different journals on music research. She is also the author of scientific articles, and she is working on her first book on artistic research.
As a concert pianist, Dr. Caruso is a renowned interpreter of contemporary music repertoire and exceptional performances, like "Stop, Repair, Prepare: Variations on Ode to Joy" on a special prepared piano conceived by the visual Artists Allora & Calzadilla. She performed many world premieres, some of which were dedicated to her. She released CDs for the labels Tactus, Centaur Records and Da Vinci Classics, which have been receiving worldwide acclamation, particularly, her interpretation of the 72 Etudes Karnatiques by the French composer Jacques Charpentier (which has been the core of her doctoral artistic research work). Rewarded by important institutions, Dr. Caruso is pursuing her concert activity throughout Europe, Asia, Russia and America taking also part in Radio and TV shows.
