Elias Degruyter obtained a Master in History (Ghent University, 2018) and a European Master in Global Studies (University of Vienna, 2021). He received an Erasmus Mundus scholarship to study global studies at the universities of Ghent, Vienna and Addis Ababa. Elias is interested in the role of culture in social and political change, with a focus on language and discourse. His master dissertations dealt with historical documentary programming in Belgian media, and with liberal discourses on fascism during the interwar period (1918-1940). During and after his studies, Elias was a journalist for news and current affairs programmes at the national public broadcasting company VRT. Since 2021, he works as a PhD researcher at the history department of Ghent University, studying media discourses and nation-building in post-war Flanders (1944-1962). Elias represents Ghent University in the editorial board of the Association belge d’Histoire contemporaine (BVNG-ABHC). He is learning Italian and plays theatre.
