Gil Verbeke is a PhD researcher at the Linguistics Department of Ghent University. His research interests include second language acquisition, speech perception and phonology. In his MA research (Ghent University, 2021), he investigated how Flemish listeners perceive and adapt to L2 accented Dutch. As a predoctoral researcher at Ghent University, he worked on a BOF research project (October 2021 – September 2022; supervisor: Prof. dr. Ellen Simon), in which he focused on how Flemish English as a Foreign Language (EFL) learners deal with variation in spoken English. From 1 November 2022 onwards, he is working on a project funded by the Flemish Research Foundation (FWO PhD Fellowship fundamental research; supervisors: Prof. dr. Ellen Simon and Prof. dr. Holger Mitterer; host institution: Ghent University), aimed at examining how regional and non-native accents in spoken English affect the intelligibility for EFL learners.
