About

Mathijs Speecke (°1993, Roeselare) studied History at Ghent University, where he obtained a master's degree, specializing in Medieval Studies. In December 2023 he defended his PhD thesis on the struggle for urban space in medieval Bruges (ca. 1100-1600) under supervision of Jan Dumolyn. He has also worked on medieval rural history and is currently employed in the 'Jan Van Eyck: Kennisprofiel, Artistieke praktijk en Receptie' project (under supervision of Maximiliaan Martens and Jan Dumolyn).
