Merel Van Nieuwerburgh is a PhD candidate in Greek literature at the Department of Literary Studies. She researches the narrative functions of animals in Greek imperial literature from the Severan period (193-235 CE), with a particular focus on Flavius Philostratus and Claudius Aelianus. Previous to this, she completed a Master's degree in Philosophy (2021, summa cum laude) and a Master's degree in Greek literature and linguistics (2025, summa cum laude), both at Ghent University.
