Abstract

The Indian Ocean World (IOW) has long facilitated cultural exchange and maritime trade, yet the contributions of Indigenous and non-elite communities remain largely overlooked. This project explores the roles of forest and coastal communities across South Asia and the wider IOW in sustaining ancient trade networks through the extraction of natural resources, grounded in place-specific ecological knowledge developed through long-term human–environment interactions.
