Abstract

Silvia Defrance studied Animationfilm at the School of Arts in Ghent / KASK where she graduated as a Master in the Audiovisual Arts and later, during 2012, she obtained a practice based PhD in Audiovisual Arts at the same school in collaboration with Ghent university.

In 2008 Silvia wrote, directed and produced ‘Candy Darling’, a crossover short film (26’) which bridges the gap between live action and CGI. The film was selected and screened at various film festivals around the world including ‘The New York Short film Festival’ (USA), ‘Flanders International Film festival’ (Belgium) and ‘The Festival Cinéma de Paris’ (France).

‘Candy Darling’ was sold to the Belgian television station Canvas and has won several international awards such as ‘Best Short film’ (San Francisco Short FF), ‘Best Experimental Film’ (European independent FF) and ‘Best Short Film’ (The AVANCA FF).

Silvia Defrance worked on a film titled ‘Her Voice’. This experimental film is part of a personal research project within the framework of her practical PhD in the Audiovisual Arts that she finished in september 2012. ‘Her Voice’ explores and questions the structures of filmmaking by pushing these cinematic codes to their limits. The film received development funding from The Flanders Audiovisual Fund / VAF and is produced by Epidemic.
