Abstract

The implication of man being a species among species is that he has to start of with the same type and quality of cognitive abilities as the next of kin in the primate world. If no mysterious causes are presupposed, the question arises how could he have developed the cognitive skills which finally characterize him? And in particular, can the features of the early tools contribute in shedding light on this problem? Within this larger framework fitting the field of cognitive archaeology, it is then suggested that a transition in the perceptive cognitive organisation of the input stream holding pace with an upright posture and consequently the freeing of the hands, must have been taken place. This project is aimed at finding data supporting or debunking this hypothesis and in second instance could this approach offer comprehension of cognitive features typical for man?
