Abstract

This project investigates individual differences among Vietnamese children’s vocabulary knowledge during childhood development from a multifactorial approach to influencing factors and a multidimensional approach to vocabulary knowledge. Its objective is threefold.

  1. The first goal is to examine whether there are associations between multiple dimensions of vocabulary knowledge in Vietnamese children, specifically, receptive versus expressive vocabulary, semantics- versus phonemics-based vocabulary and the like, and whether or not these associations differ across age and location.

  2. The second goal is to document to what extent individual variables of child and environmental characteristics influence multiple dimensions of vocabulary knowledge in Vietnamese children, and to examine whether or not these influences differ across age and location.

  3. The third goal is to identify the strongest predictor of various dimensions of vocabulary knowledge in Vietnamese children, and to explore whether the predictor of lexical dimensions is the same one across age and location differences or not.
