Abstract

This project studies the reception of influential 18th-century English periodicals during the late 18th and early 19th centuries in Italy. English periodicals, particularly satirical ones, were crucial to the expanding concept of authorship during the 18th century, and the pseudonymous personae under which periodicals were written played a key role in their success. The project examines how Italian authors adapted The Spectator, studying the interactions between the literary market, the periodical press, and new conceptions of authorship.
