Seppe van Bladel (he/him) graduated with a master’s degree in philosophy from the University of Antwerp. During his master’s, he became interested in science communication through working together with science communicator Julie De Smedt. Together, they conducted qualitative research to map the experiences of female researchers in Flanders with epistemic injustice and testimonial injustice during science communication.
In his doctoral research at Ghent University, he is involved in a public engagement study with Flemish and South African young adults regarding the legislation (including ethical aspects) of CRISPR-Cas9, and a risk communication study on the WHO’s (World Health Organization) communication on airborne transmission of COVID-19 during the pandemic.
He also co-wrote a coursebook on media ethics with Prof. Kristien Hens and Dr. Lisanne Meinen for Pelckmans Publishers, which includes two chapters on inclusive and ethical science communication.
