I am a PhD student working on Buddhism in Turfan around the 5th century. My research interests developed from a module on the “Global Middle Ages” I took at York. While the definition of any “global middle age” is still under review, I was inspired by the idea and started to view the world during the medieval time in a horizontal and connected way and decided to shift my focus from Europe to Central Asia and China. I am interested in how various languanges and cultures interacted in the area and how Buddhism spread across linguistic and ethnic boundaries (or if there was any boundary).
