Julia Exarchos is an historian with a focus on the Early and High Middle Ages. She studied at the University of Heidelberg, Germany, and King’s College, University of London, UK. She obtained a bachelor’s degree (2010) in History and Political Science and a master’s degree (2013) in History with an emphasis on Ancient and Medieval History at the University of Heidelberg, Germany. Since 2013 she is working on her PhD thesis which is entitled “Ritual scripting as work in progress: codifying rituals of inclusion and exclusion in the tenth- to twelfth-century West” (BOF research fellowship) at the University of Ghent. Her research interests include the social, intellectual, and cultural history of the Early and High Middle Ages and royal and imperial ideologies, especially in medieval France and the Empire. Her actual research concentrates on episcopal government and authority, ritual behavior, manuscript culture of elites in Northern France, and the enforcement of ritual norms in the tenth to twelfth centuries.
In 2015 she taught as a lecturer at the Johannes Gutenberg-Universität Mainz, Germany. In June 2015 she also obtained an MGH-Junior fellowship at the Monumenta Germaniae Historica in Munich and in 2016 she is a Visiting Scholar at the University of California, Berkeley, USA.
