Dr. Jeroen Wijnendaele is a Senior Post-Doctoral Research Fellow of Ghent University (currently funded by the Flemish Research Council - F.W.O.). His expertise relates to the political and military history of Imperial Rome, the complex development of barbarian societies in Late Antiquity, and the reception of 'The Fall of Rome' in western culture.
Dr. Wijnendaele studied History at Ghent University as an undergraduate and went on to complete an MA in Ancient History at Università di Bologna. He moved on to University College Cork for a PhD in Classics on the contribution of ‘warlordism’ to the disintegration of the western Roman army (c. 395-480 CE). He has also held research and visiting fellowships at the Belgian Academy of Rome, University of Melbourne, and Universität Tübingen.
In recent years, Dr. Wijnendaele has published widely on Late Roman history. He is the author of 'Romeinen en barbaren' (Leuven, 2013), the very first Dutch study on the 'Fall of Rome', which sold more than 2000 copies in its first year of publication and was nominated for the Public History Award of Eastern Flanders (sold out as of 2017). Dr. Wijnendaele also rpublished the first modern study of the late Roman warlord Bonifatius (Bloomsbury Academic, 2015), which has received praise in various journals (e.g. The Classical Review, Gnomon, Latomus) and has already seen a revised edition and Italian translation (Editore 21, 2017).
Dr. Wijnendaele has taught various courses in Australia, Belgium and Ireland on Republican and Imperial Roman History, Greek & Roman Civilization, the Roman Army, the Julio-Claudian Dynasty, Romans & Barbarians in Late Antiquity, the Fall of the Roman Empire, Byzantium and the rise of Islam, Byzantine History, and the Socio-Political History of Crime. He welcomes final year BA and MA students in History for dissertation supervision.
