Dr. Jeroen Wijnendaele is a Visiting Professor of Ghent University (currently funded by the Gerda Henkel Stiftung). His expertise relates to the political, social and military history of Imperial Rome and Early Byzantium, the complex development of barbarian communities in Late Antiquity, and the reception of 'The Fall of Rome' in western culture.
Dr. Wijnendaele studied History at Ghent University as an undergraduate and went on to complete an MA in Ancient History at Università di Bologna. He moved on to University College Cork for a PhD in Classics on the contribution of ‘warlordism’ to the disintegration of the western Roman army (c. 395-480 CE). He has also held research and visiting fellowships at the Belgian Academy of Rome, the Bonn Center for Dependency and Slavery Studies, University of Melbourne, University of Ottawa and Universität Tübingen.
In recent years, Dr. Wijnendaele has published widely on Late Roman history. Among his most recent publications are a research volume on Late Roman Italy. Imperium to Regnum (Edinburgh University Press, 2023) and a Dutch monograph on De wereld van Clovis. De val van Rome en de geboorte van het westen (Antwerp: Ertsberg, 2024), which is scheduled for its 3rd edition less than five months since publication, and was nominated for the 2025 Homerus award for best Dutch tradebook on Antiquity. To date, Dr. Wijnendaele has taught ten courses in Australia, Belgium and Ireland covering the entire width of Roman and Byzantine History (c. 753 BCE - 1453 CE). He welcomes final year BA and MA students in History for dissertation supervision.
