I am an assistant professor (tenure track) in Southeast European Languages and Cultures at the Department of Languages and Cultures (section Slavic and East European Studies).
My research is situated in the modern social and cultural history of Southeast Europe. I am particularly interested in the dynamics of social relations and identification against backgrounds of political and socio-economic transformations in the region's twentieth-century history. Focussing on Southeast Europe from the perspective of area studies, I engage with broader disciplines, including nationalism studies, labour and business history, and urban studies.
I was a predoctoral research fellow of the Flemish Science Foundation (2008-2012). After obtaining my PhD, I was active in the NGO-sector in Kosovo and Serbia, working on issues of minority rights and transitional justice. I returned to academic research in 2017 as a recipient of a Marie Skłodowka Curie individual fellowship at the Leibniz Institute for East and Southeast European Studies (Regensburg) with a research project on “Individualising Socialism: Individual Agency and Social Change in Socialist Yugoslavia’s Periphery, 1950s–1970s”. I also worked as a postdoctoral fellow in the ERC-project “Unlikely Refuge? Refugees and citizens in East-Central Europe in the 20th century".
