This project focuses on the research of provenance and meaning of the religious objects featuring Japanese deities (kami 神 and buddhas 仏) and present in the museum and private collections of Belgium. Such objects include portable shrines (zushi 厨子), hanging tables (kakebotoke 懸仏), insence containers (kōgōbutsu 香合仏) and hanging scrolls (kakejiku 掛け軸). The initial stage of research includes objects from the Musée de Mariemont, Museum Kunst en Geschiedenis, Gents Universiteitsmuseum, and private collections. MA students in Japanese Studies are welcome to contribute to this ongoing research project.
