The aim of this project is to attain a comprehensive understanding of the role that the historiography of philosophy played in German neo-Kantianism’s reconceptualization of the boundaries and identity of philosophy in the late nineteenth century. Guided by a shared pledge to ‘return to Kant’, neo-Kantian philosophers limited the task of philosophy to an epistemological analysis of science on the one hand, and an examination of its own history on the other hand. Although many scholars have analysed the nature of neo-Kantians’ epistemological project, an account of the second prong of their project remains lacking. Through an investigation of neo-Kantian philosophers’ conceptions of the historiography of philosophy and their institutional activities, this project provides such an account and relates it to the first prong of their project. Three main objectives delineate the scope of this project. Firstly, clarifying why neo-Kantians ‘return to Kant’ was accompanied by meticulous research on the history of Kantian philosophy. Secondly, determining how the historiography of philosophy was gradually integrated into neo-Kantian epistemology. Thirdly, analysing how neo-Kantian philosophers’ conceptions of the history of philosophy intersected with their institutional activities. These objectives will be reached by means of a study of the beliefs and professional activities of four philosophers: Hermann Cohen, Hans Vaihinger, Wilhelm Windelband, and Eduard Zeller.
Het doel van dit project is om te begrijpen welke rol de historiografie van de filosofie speelde in de Duitse neokantiaanse herdefiniëring van de grenzen en identiteit van de filosofie in de late negentiende eeuw. Geleid door een gedeeld ideaal om ‘naar Kant terug te keren’, beperkten neokantiaanse filosofen de taken van de filosofie enerzijds tot een epistemologische analyse van de wetenschap en anderzijds tot een analyse van haar eigen geschiedenis. In de hedendaagse academische literatuur wordt laatstgenoemde taak nauwelijks onderzocht. Door te onderzoeken hoe neokantianen nadachten over de historiografie van de filosofie en wat hun institutionele activiteiten waren, slaagt dit project erin om die lacune op te vullen en de twee zijden van het neokantiaanse project met elkaar te verbinden. Het project beoogt drie zaken. Ten eerste verduidelijkt het waarom de ‘terugkeer naar Kant’ van het neokantianisme gepaard ging met nauwkeurig onderzoek naar de geschiedenis van de Kantiaanse filosofie. Ten tweede bepaalt het hoe de historiografie van de filosofie geleidelijk aan werd geïntegreerd in neokantiaanse epistemologie. Ten derde analyseert het hoe de opvattingen van neokantiaanse filosofen over de geschiedenis van de filosofie samenhingen met hun institutionele activiteiten. Deze doelen zullen worden bereikt door het bestuderen van de opvattingen en professionele activiteiten van vier filosofen: Hermann Cohen, Hans Vaihinger, Wilhelm Windelband en Eduard Zeller.
