Abstract

This research deals with the semantic and syntactic functions, and the contextualized usages of tense and aspect expressions in early Chinese Buddhist literature translated from Indic languages before the fifth century. These linguistic features will be compared with those in pre-Buddhist texts and contemporary non-Buddhist texts thus revealing how markers of tense and aspect developed in early forms of Chinese.
