Abstract

In leading a musical ensemble performance, a conductor needs to ensure temporal coordination among ensemble musicians and at the same time inform them of intended expressive goals. Musicians in their turn need to understand the conductor's communication of expressive timings. Drawing on the theory of embodied music cognition, the PhD project focuses on the role of body movement of a perfromer in the interaction with the conductor’s expressive timings and gives more insight into psychological mechanisms of timing perception.
