Lies Vervaet is a postdoctoral fellow of the Research Foundation Flanders – FWO. She works on a project about women, labour and land in the late medieval Low Countries, in particular in coastal Flanders. She received her PhD at Ghent University in 2015, with a study on the estate management of St. John’s Hospital of Bruges, one of the major landowners of medieval Flanders (Estate management in a changing rural society: St. John’s Hospital of Bruges, c 1275 – c. 1575, supervisor Erik Thoen). In this study, she focused on the organisation of the leasehold system and on the organisation of rural labour. Her main research interests are rural history, gender history and landscape history.
