Tina Goethals is a post-doctoral researcher and lecturer, currently affiliated with the Department of Philosophy and Moral Sciences of Ghent University and the Ghent University Hospital. Previously, she was affiliated as researcher and lecturer at the Department of Special Needs Education Ghent (“Orthopedagogics”) of Ghent University. She has obtained a Joint PhD in Pedagogical Sciences (Department of Special Needs Education, Ghent University) and in Social Sciences (Department of Sociology, University of Antwerp).

In her research projects, she combines her Disability Studies background with research into sensitive topics (i.a. sexuality, inclusion, violence, privacy, disability, gender, diversity, … ) and bio-ethical topics (i.a. whole genome sequencing, egg donation, in vitro gametogenesis, ...); with a particular focus on qualitative inquiry, empirical research and inclusive research methods.

Goethals currently lectures on empirical research methods and qualitative inquiry for moral sciences and (bio)ethics and is now conducting research on the following topics:

- Ethical aspects of whole genome sequencing for tuberculosis source investigation (Centre for Whole Genome Sequencing Studies of Tuberculosis)

- Sexual violence on women with disabilities (i.a. Report sexual violence against women with intellectual disabilities)

- Egg providers’ views and experiences on egg donation (Egg Donation in the UK, Belgium and Spain: an interdisciplinary study)

- Ethical concerns regarding in vitro gametogenesis (The science and ethics of stem cell derived gametes)

- Media representation of disability (i.a. Collectively analyzing popular television texts on disability)

Tina Goethals is editor-in-chief of the Journal of Diversity and Gender Studies (DiGeSt).
