Eva Van Daele obtained her doctorate at the department of Art History, Musicology and Theatre Studies at Ghent University in February 2024. In her doctoral dissertation Extended Characters: Opera’s Fascination with Reconfiguring the Character-Performer Relationship in the Twenty-First Century, she studied contemporary operas that extend a character beyond the body and voice of a single performer and contextualized this against the background of precedents in operatic history. She combined music analysis and performance analysis with observation of a creation process of a new opera and interviews with artists.
During her studies she was an intern at the dramaturgy department of Opera Ballet Vlaanderen (Antwerp and Ghent). Her observation of the creation process of Chaya Czernowin’s opera Infinite Now (Ghent, 2017) initiated the doctoral project. Since May 2024 she is the dramaturg of the Antwerp Symphony Orchestra.
