Benno Spieker is a PhD student at the Institute for Psycho-accoustics and Electronic Music (IPEM) at Ghent University and at the Human Media Interaction group at the University of Twente (joint-PhD).
Benno has a master degree in Musicology from Utrecht University (MA, 2015, cum laude) and a bachelor degree in Teaching Music in Schools from ArtEZ University of the Arts, Arnhem (2003). After working at a secondary school (2002-2009) and at a teacher academy (2009-2017), Benno currently teaches pedagogy and digital didactics at the Music in Education course at the conservatoire of ArtEZ University of the Arts in Enschede (since 2015). Furthermore, Benno is project manager for the Dutch foundation Méér muziek in de klas (More Music in the Classroom), which is promoting music education in primary education on a national scale. Since 2020, Benno coordinates the national project group Subject Integration and is member of the national project group on Technology in music in schools. He is also a frequently asked guest lecturer at Saxion University of applied sciences and the Royal Conservatory at The Hague.
On voluntary basis, Benno is board member (secretary) of the Dutch music teacher association (VLS). Since 2021, he is the Dutch national coordinator for the European association of music in schools (EAS). To keep a healthy connection with the music practice, Benno plays drums/percussion with Dutch singers Laura Engel and Esther Pelgrom. He also writes songs for both.
