Claudio Scarvaglieri is Assistant Professor for Applied Language Studies (German) at the Department of Translation, Interpreting and Communciation of Ghent University. His main research areas include societal multilingualism, language ideologies and language attitudes, and health communication. More specifically, he has a keen interest in:
- The role and use of immigrant languages in Western European societies (incl. Germany, Switzerland, Belgium);
- Attitudes and beliefs about language(s) and how they influence language use;
- The way multilingualism is managed in health care contexts, particularly concerning mental health;
- The role of language in psychotherapy discourse (discourse-specific forms of language, relationship between language and healing).
In his research, Scarvaglieri uses discourse analytic, conversation analytic as well as qualitative sociolinguistic methods.
