Jasper Vervaeke studied Romance languages and literature (UAntwerpen), journalism (Lessius Hogeschool) and Latin American Studies (Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México). He obtained his PhD at UAntwerpen with a dissertation on the acclaimed Colombian novelist Juan Gabriel Vásquez. Afterwards, he was a researcher and guest professor at KU Leuven, UGent and UAntwerpen. He currently works as a Spanish lecturer at UGent. He has published articles, essays, reviews and literary translations (Spanish-Dutch) in academic and cultural journals and newspapers. He is the author of two books related to Juan Gabriel Vásquez: the essay Juan Gabriel Vásquez: la distorsión deliberada (Verbum, Madrid, 2023) and the book of conversations Modelar la memoria. Conversaciones con Juan Gabriel Vásquez (Libros Malpensante/Universidad El Bosque, Bogotá, 2025; La Vorágine, Santander, 2025). His research revolves primarily around contemporary Spanish-American literature and world literature.
