Maya Termonia is a Language Instructor specializing in Egyptian Arabic and Arabic Grammar and serves as the Coordinator of the Islamic History Open Data Platform (IHODP). She previously held the positions of Research Associate for both the Mamlukisation of the Mamluk Sultanate I and II, where she also served as a coordinator.
Since 2010, Maya has been teaching Egyptian Arabic using TAFL (Teaching Arabic as a Foreign Language) methodologies and Arabic grammar based on traditional Arabic grammatical knowledge. She is a pioneer in challenging the widespread practice of using European language structures as standards in Arabic language instruction.
In the Educational Master's program, she contributes to methodology courses in Foreign Language teaching, focusing on Grammar, Vocabulary, and Listening skills. She has also previously contributed to TAFL courses at the Netherlands-Flemish Institute in Cairo (NVIC).
Currently, Maya is working on an Arabic grammar curriculum rooted in traditional Arabic grammatical knowledge and aligned with decolonizing language teaching principles.
