Abstract

This project approaches oceanic worlds in South Asia as entangled seascapes: relational assemblages shaped through long-term interactions between human communities, marine ecologies, and monsoonal temporalities. Moving beyond land-centred and state-focused historiographies, it investigates how oceans and littorals functioned as spaces from which counter-histories emerged between the early historical and the early colonial periods. Drawing on archaeological datasets, material assemblages, environmental and palaeoecological records, historical archives, and Traditional Ecological Knowledge, the research focuses on marginal and mobile actors (seafarers, fishers, pearl divers, islanders, coastal foragers, and other maritime communities) whose histories have often remained peripheral to dominant narratives. At the same time, it explores the active role played by non-human actors, such as marine life and atmospheric forces, in historical processes. Conceptually grounded in blue humanities, more-than-human theory, and decolonial archaeology, the project conceptualises the ocean as an agent shaping South Asian history, advancing a new framework for interpreting South Asia's pasts.
