Abstract

Bookperformance emerges as a focused inquiry within the broader Authorship as Performance framework, investigating how the book operates as an active site of performative authorship. Moving beyond traditional notions of the author as a fixed, originative identity, this project examines the ways in which authorship is enacted and staged through the material, paratextual, and contextual elements of the book.

By conceptualizing the book itself as a performative object, Bookperformance highlights how aspects such as design, typography, layout, publication strategies, and reading contexts contribute to the ongoing performance of authorship. The project investigates the dynamic interplay between author, text, publisher, and reader, exploring how these relations produce and negotiate authorial presence and authority.

Drawing on theories from literary studies, performance studies, and book history, the project situates authorship as an embodied, relational practice that extends beyond the writing process into the circulation and reception of the book. Through both theoretical analysis and creative practice, Bookperformance addresses how the book’s physical and mediated forms influence the construction and perception of authorial identity.

In an era marked by digital transformations and shifting cultural economies, Bookperformance aims to reframe the understanding of authorship as a collaborative and performative act, foregrounding the book as a vital site where authorial meaning is continuously produced and contested.
