Confidential images of crime scenes, in the form of glass negatives and photographic prints in legal files from the 1920s and 1930s, housed in the State Archives, formed the somewhat unusual starting point for research into the “true nature” of domestic interiors during the interwar period in Belgium. Forensic photography, which emerged in Belgium at that time from a specific legal perspective, is an unexplored but valuable source for research into historical interiors.
Vertrouwelijk beeldmateriaal van plaatsen delict, in de vorm van glasnegatieven en fotoafdrukken in juridische dossiers uit de jaren 1920 en '30, ondergebracht in het Rijksarchief, vormde het wat ongebruikelijke vertrekpunt voor onderzoek naar de 'ware aard' van domestieke interieurs tijdens het interbellum in België. Forensische fotografie, die in België toen opkwam vanuit een specifiek juridisch oogpunt, vormt immers een nog onontgonnen doch waardevolle bron voor onderzoek naar historische interieurs.
