Abstract

This PhD research examined contemporary perceptions of Female Genital Cutting (FGC) through the lens of competing authoritative discourses with a particular focus on perceptions and conceptualizations of the relation between FGC and religion (especially Islam). It analyzes dominant, authoritative discourses in the socio-cultural fields of development projects, political Islam, institutionalized Islam (al-Azhar), and Muslim-Christian relations.
