Abstract

This PhD research examined contemporary perceptions of Female Genital Cutting (FGC) through the lens of competing authoritative discourses. It maintained a particular focus on conceptualizations of the relation between FGC and religion, and particularly Islam. The analysis showed dominant, authoritative discourses in the socio-cultural fields of development work, political Islam, institutionalized Islam (al-Azhar), and Muslim-Christian relations.
