This project maps the mental representation of pluricentricity in the Dutch language area by empirically studying perceptions of and attitudes towards national grammatical and lexical variation. It will address the issue of conceptual and methodological vagueness in much research on pluricentricity by adopting a systematic transnational approach (collecting data in the Netherlands, Belgium, Suriname, Aruba, Curaçao and Sint Maarten) and by methodically comparing (i) different dimensions of acceptance, (ii) different types of language users and (iii) different types of national variation. The project will as such afford unique insights into the language internal and external factors influencing the acceptance of natiolectal variation and into the relevance of the nation as a level of analysis in the current Late Modern age. It will hence allow feeding present-day debates on the usefulness of the pluricentricity concept with empirically sound arguments. Methodologically, the mixed-methods approach developed to study acceptance comprehensibly – complementing online experiments with face-to-face qualitative interviews – will be transferrable to other language contexts. This will in the long run allow more reliable comparison of international research data and hence also more reliable, empirically grounded typologies of pluricentric languages.
Dit project brengt de mentale representatie van pluricentriciteit in het Nederlandse taalgebied in kaart via drie empirische studies die peilen naar het bewustzijn en de acceptatie van nationale grammaticale en lexicale variatie. Via een systematische transnationale aanpak (met data uit Nederland, België, Suriname, Aruba, Curaçao en Sint Maarten) en door een methodische vergelijking van (i) verschillende dimensies van acceptatie, (ii) verschillende types taalgebruikers en (iii) verschillende types nationale variatie zal ik twee fundamentale, maar vaak in vaagheid gehulde concepten in het onderzoek naar pluricentriciteit – bewustzijn en acceptatie – conceptueel en methodologisch uitdiepen. Het project zal empirisch inzicht bieden in de taalinterne en -externe factoren die de acceptatie van natiolectische variatie beïnvloeden en zal zo ook toelaten de relevantie in te schatten van de natie als analyseniveau in het huidige Laatmoderne tijdperk. Op die manier zullen discussies over het nut van het concept ‘pluricentriciteit’ gevoed kunnen worden met empirische argumenten. Methodologisch zal de ontwikkelde mixed-methods-benadering – waarin online experimenten gecombineerd worden met kwalitatieve een-op-eeninterviews – met minimale aanpassingen ook toepasbaar zijn in andere taalcontexten, wat de vergelijkbaar van internationale studies ten goede zal komen en betrouwbaardere typologieën van pluricentrische talen mogelijk zal maken.
