Abstract

The region between Gent, Bruges and Aardenburg is characterised by surface clays of the tertiary formation of Asse. During the 11th-13th centuries, the slighty undulating cuesta-landscape of Zomergem, Knesselare, Oedelem and Adegem was used as a region of intensive clay extraction for the production of cooking ware, mainly produced in reduced atmospheres. This research focuses on the mineral and typo-chronological characterization of different productions, together with the study of the rural context in which these ceramics were consumed. In addition to the study of local distribution networks, the possibility of export of ceramic forms to the surrounding cities is being investigated.
