This project uses contemporary art as a lens to write the history of Antwerp, a port city with an arthistorical reputation, between 1980 and 2000. The study examines a corpus of exhibitions, featuring artworks created by (inter)national artists using the city as subject and/or site, with the historical crux being Antwerp 93, a multifaceted event in honour of the title of European Capital of Culture (1993). The project aims to 1) outline a portrait of a post-industrial city through art and 2) to investigate how this portrait revises existing academic scholarship on the relationship between art and the city by entwining art history and urban history. These objectives will be realised using technologies, such as GIS, and a two-fold approach: 1. an iconographical, material analysis of the corpus in relation to art- and urban-historical discourses to understand the various modes in which artworks and exhibitions reflect on the changing urban environment; 2. study the discourse about the city created by cultural policy and consider how it relates to, interweaves with, or conflicts with the various discursive images on the city that arise from the corpus. The combination of the two research lines means this project will transcend the tendency to consider the complex interplay between art, cultural policy, and city development in isolation from either an urban or art-historical framework.
Dit project gebruikt hedendaagse kunst als lens om de geschiedenis te schrijven van Antwerpen, een havenstad met kunsthistorische reputatie, tussen 1980-2000. De studie onderzoekt een corpus van tentoonstellingen, met kunstwerken gemaakt door (inter)nationale kunstenaars waarvoor de stad als onderwerp en/of locatie is gebruikt, met als historische crux Antwerpen 93, een veelzijdig event ter ere van de titel Culturele Hoofdstad van Europa (1993). Het project beoogt 1) een portret te schetsen van een postindustriële stad via de kunst; 2) te onderzoeken hoe dit portret de bestaande academische literatuur over de relatie tussen kunst en stad herziet door kunst- en stadsgeschiedenis met elkaar te verweven. Deze doelen worden gerealiseerd, dankzij technologieën zoals GIS, via een tweeledige aanpak: 1. een iconografische, materiële analyse van het corpus in relatie tot kunst- en stadshistorische discoursen, om de diverse modi waarop kunstwerken en tentoonstellingen reflecteren op de veranderende stedelijke omgeving, te begrijpen; 2. bestuderen van het discours over de stad gecreëerd door het cultuurbeleid en nagaan hoe dit zich verhoudt tot, verweeft met of conflicteert met de diverse discursieve beelden over de stad voortkomend uit het corpus. De combinatie van de twee onderzoekslijnen maakt dat dit project de tendens overstijgt om de complexe wisselwerking tussen kunst, cultuurbeleid en stadsontwikkeling geïsoleerd te bekijken vanuit ofwel een stedelijk of kunsthistorisch kader.
