This project proposes to investigate a critical juncture in the formation of psychoanalytic theory. Its aim is to trace the Kantian sources of Sigmund Freud's use of the notion of judgment in his 1895 manuscript, Entwurf einer Psychologie. By doing so, it seeks to shed new light on the profound but under-examined relation between psychoanalysis and transcendental idealism. The central thesis is that Freud's use of 'judgment' in his systematic attempt at conceptualizing psychic causality betrays a reciprocal entanglement with Kant's transcendental logic.
