Abstract

Transnational impostures are acts of deception that occur across linguistic and cultural borders. In the Romantic period—roughly, the 1790s through 1830s—, these were abundantly present and attracted great interest. The proposed project, which centrally entails a doctoral research project, examines such transnational impostures. Its objective is to probe the ways in British and French readers and writers understood their cultural context in the Romantic period, which was undergoing a vast transformation as modes of communication greatly accelerated and diversified in ways that closely resemble our own changing media landscape. Impostures are uniquely valuable to a reconstruction of responses and adaptations to changing media because they invited very intense debate. To examine impostures for their cultural insights, the project will read a selection of notable examples, and how they circulated in the British and French periodical press. It will reconstruct the reception of these impostures, and it will analyse these to extract explicit reflections on the nature of mediation. In pursuing these readings, the project stages an intersection of four fields of scholarship: Romantic studies, media theory, translation studies, and fake studies. These fields have recently begun to grow closer, and the present project has as its largest aim to give this reconciliation a decisive push.
