Abstract

When it comes to L2 vocabulary learning, both semantic elaboration, i.e. the increased attention to word meaning, and structural elaboration, i.e. the enhanced attention to word form, are important. However, structural elaboration is often neglected in research. Therefore, this research project aims at investigating techniques that draw attention to the morpho-phonological features of the target word and allow learners to build memory traces of word form. Two techniques will be closely studied: word writing and form-meaning motivation. Both writing the target word and assessing its form-meaning motivation will direct attention to the target word form. In controlled experiments the potential effect of both elaboration techniques on the retention of new vocabulary will be tested.
