Abstract

This project aims to contribute to the view that between 1450 and 1650, the (social and cultural) world of performative literature (esp. communal theatre) was at the nexus of a Western European media system; mediating between oral, visual, performative, scribal and print cultures, and contributing to the emergence of an early modern knowledge and information society. Performative literature was a very important model for the making of public knowledge. This project investages the social networks, institutions and individual agents of performative literary culture in the metropolitan city of Antwerp that were involved in the transfer, adaptation and application of knowledge and information in the Dutch vernacular.
