The project will investigate the phenomenon of transnationalism in the late 1960s and 1970s by focusing on the cultural exchange between Argentina and Belgium and the subsequent cross-border activities of Argentine artists in Europe. The specific focus lies on how these crossborder activities could be considered 'transnational' and how the 'transnational' is then adequately defined. Qualifying the notion of 'effect', which defines transnationalism as a twofold phenomenon in the sense that transnational artists have an effect on local art scenes and, conversely, that local art scenes have an effect on transnational artists, is central in this respect. By studying the transnational through a specific case of international cultural exchange, the project aims to strengthen the transnational field of art history from within by formulating clear and precise definitions that are currently lacking in the field. In addition, the specific conclusions the project will draw on transnationalism will ultimately counterbalance art historiographies written from a nationalist perspective.
Het project zal het fenomeen van transnationalisme in de late jaren 1960 en 1970 onderzoeken door te focussen op de culturele uitwisseling tussen Argentinië en België en de daaropvolgende grensoverstijgende activiteiten van Argentijnse kunstenaars in Europa. Specifieke aandacht gaat uit naar hoe deze grensoverstijgende activiteiten als 'transnationaal' kunnen worden beschouwd en hoe het 'transnationale' dan adequaat wordt gedefinieerd. De kwalificatie van het begrip 'effect', dat transnationalisme definieert als een tweeledig fenomeen in de zin dat transnationale kunstenaars een impact hebben op lokale kunstscènes en, omgekeerd, dat lokale kunstscènes een impact hebben op transnationale kunstenaars staat hierbij centraal. Door het transnationale te bestuderen aan de hand van een specifiek geval van internationale culturele uitwisseling, wil het project de transnationale kunstgeschiedenis versterken van binnenuit door duidelijke en precieze definities te formuleren die momenteel ontbreken. Bovendien zullen de specifieke conclusies over transnationalisme uiteindelijk een tegenwicht bieden aan kunst historiografieën geschreven vanuit een nationalistisch perspectief.
