This research contains the water landscapes in the arid region of Turfan (Xinjiang, China). The focus will be both on the anthropological and cultural ties to the elements used to acces water, as wel as the geographical conditions in which they persist. Remote sensing, historical map regression, GIS and fieldwork will be used in this research. Special attention will be given to the karez or qanat system in Turfan.
