Abstract

This project examines strategies of marriage and succession among social elites, as well as their impact on the political structures in the counties of Flanders and Hainaut during the 11th and 12th centuries — a period when feudal law grew more complex, and noblewomen became increasingly involved in feudal transactions and strategies to help consolidate local and regional seigneurial power structures.
