Abstract

The goal of this study is to examine whether there is passive voice in Ancient Chinese by analyzing the origin and development of all the constructions conventionally referred to as "passive constructinos". The study focuses on material until the end of Han dynasty. If the answer is no, then what is the reason. If the answer is yes, what are the specific characteristics of the passive constructions in Ancient Chinese relative to that in Modern Chinese and in comparison to other languages?
