Joke Daems (they/them) is assistant professor human-computer interaction in translation & interpreting studies at Ghent University. They are a member of the EQTIS research team (Empirical and Quantitative Translation and Interpreting Studies) and the LT³ Language and Translation Technology Team. They obtained a PhD in Translation Studies at Ghent University in 2016, working on identifying the differences between human translation and post-editing for students and professional translators. This work was awarded the CIUTI PhD Award in 2017.
Their research focuses on the impact of translation technology on translation (process, product, perception), translators (effort, attitude), and society, with a more recent focus on gender-inclusivity. Together with Janiça Hackenbuchner, they launched the DeBiasByUs platform and Bias Shield plugin to raise awareness about gender bias in MT and collect instances of gender bias. Since 2023, they have been a member of the organising committee of GITT, the international workshop on Gender-Inclusive Translation Technologies.
Joke teaches courses on translation technology, machine translation post-editing, technical writing, and ethics for human-centered AI. They represent our department in the European Master's in Translation network. Joke is happy to supervise dissertations in the broader field of human-computer interaction within translation and interpreting studies as well as studies focusing on gender representation and bias in different languages.
